Sous the cat looking puzzled — that import didn't work
Most imports in Souschef work quickly and smoothly — but every now and then, something doesn’t go quite as expected. Don’t worry! There are usually simple explanations and easy fixes. Below you’ll find the most common reasons an import might fail, along with what you can do about each one.
Souschef extracts recipe information from the post’s caption or description and, when available, the video’s spoken audio. If the recipe isn’t described in either source, the imported recipe may be incomplete — or there may be nothing for Souschef to extract. What to try: Look for a post where the creator has included the recipe in the caption (or description), or spoken through the ingredients and steps in the video. These tend to work best. You can also try pasting the recipe as plain text if a friend shared it separately.
Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube imports can take up to 30 seconds because Souschef is analyzing the caption (or description) and spoken audio when available. If it seems stuck well beyond that, something may have gone wrong in the process. What to try: Close the Souschef app completely, then reopen it and try the import again. Make sure you have a stable internet connection before retrying.
Souschef works with most popular recipe blogs, but some websites use custom or non-standard layouts that make it harder to extract structured recipe data. What to try: If the import is incomplete, you can copy the URL and try importing it again — sometimes a retry does the trick. Alternatively, take a screenshot of the recipe page and use the Scan feature to extract it from the image instead.
AI extraction is smart, but it’s not perfect. Sometimes an ingredient quantity, a step, or the recipe title might be missing or slightly off — especially if the original post or page was formatted in an unusual way. What to try: You can edit any field inside Souschef before saving. Tap any ingredient, step, or title to update it. It only takes a moment to fill in what’s missing and you’ll end up with a perfect recipe ready to cook.
If you can’t find the Souschef icon when you tap Share in Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, or your browser, it may not have been added to your share menu yet. What to try: Follow our guide on how to add Souschef to your share menu — it only takes a minute and you’ll only need to do it once.
If someone sent you a recipe by text message, email, or in a Notes app, you don’t need to find a link. What to try: Use Import from plain text. Copy the recipe text, tap + in Souschef, choose Paste text, and Souschef’s AI will structure it into ingredients and steps.
Occasionally a temporary issue can cause an import to fail with an error — this can happen due to a brief network hiccup or a problem on the source platform’s end. What to try: Wait a moment and try the import again. If it keeps failing after a couple of attempts, please contact our support team and let us know which source you were importing from and what the error said — we’ll look into it right away.
You can always edit a recipe after importing — tap the recipe in your collection, then tap Edit to fix anything that didn’t extract correctly. You’re never stuck with the first result!
