# How Souschef stores your recipes and personal data Source: https://docs.trysouschef.com/account/data-storage Your Souschef recipes and personal information are stored securely using encrypted cloud storage compliant with SOC2 Type 2 standards. Souschef stores your data securely in the cloud, so your recipes are always available whenever you sign in — whether that's on your phone, a new tablet, or any other device. Here's a plain-language overview of what we store, where it lives, and how it's protected. ## What data is stored When you use Souschef, we store: * **Your account information** — your first and last name, and your email address. * **Your saved recipes** — everything you've added or created inside the app. * **Journal entries** — private notes and photos of what you cooked, tied to your account. * **Shopping lists** — including lists you share and lists you join. * **Collection membership** — collections you own or have joined. That's what we collect to make the app work well for you. Some things stay **on this device only** and are not restored on a new phone or after a reinstall: * **Meal Plan** — your weekly plan of saved recipes * **Pinned recipes** — the short-term now-cooking tray * **Imported Recipes history** — recent import attempts (see [Recipes missing](/troubleshooting/recipes-missing)) ## Where data is stored Your data is stored using **Supabase**, a trusted cloud infrastructure provider. Here's what that means for your security: * **Encrypted at rest** — your data is encrypted while it's stored, so it's protected even at the infrastructure level. * **SOC2 Type 2 compliant** — Supabase meets rigorous, independently audited security standards. * **Private server infrastructure** — data is held on isolated private servers, typically AWS EC2 instances. * **Server locations** — servers are located in the **United States** or potentially other countries. ## Data sharing Souschef **does not sell your personal data** — ever. We only share data in limited circumstances: as needed to operate the app (for example, sending emails you've opted into), to comply with legal obligations, or to protect our rights. We do not share your information with advertisers or data brokers. ## Your rights You're in control of your data. At any time, you can: * **Access or update** your personal information directly within the Souschef app. * **Delete** your account and all associated data from within the app or by contacting [support@nekonote.co](mailto:support@nekonote.co). Souschef complies with the **General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)**, so if you're based in the EU or UK, your data rights are fully respected. Google Play subscriptions are designed to restore automatically when you're signed into the correct account. Your recipe is now in your collection, ready to cook whenever you are. 🎉 📸 Screenshot needed: the recipe preview screen before saving, with AI-suggested tags pre-selected and the Save button visible. ## Tips for your first import **Start with a website recipe.** Recipe blogs and food websites tend to give the cleanest results. If you're testing Souschef for the first time, try pasting a link from your favourite food blog. **The Share button is your best friend.** Once you've [added Souschef to your share menu](/getting-started/add-to-share-menu), you can import any recipe without even opening the app first. Just tap Share in any app and select Souschef. **For video recipes, the link is all you need.** When importing from YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, just copy and paste the URL for the video or post — Souschef will do the work of extracting the recipe for you. ## What to do if it doesn't work Sometimes an import might not go quite as expected — a website might use an unusual layout, or a video might not have a full recipe in its description. Don't worry! Check out our guide on [why imports sometimes fail](/importing/why-import-fails) for common fixes and workarounds. ## Prompt ideas Use these as starting points in ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI chat app. I have tomatoes, eggs, and carrots that are expiring soon. Make a simple dinner using these ingredients and as few extra ingredients as possible. Include a title, ingredients, servings, and step-by-step instructions. Make a weeknight recipe using rice, canned beans, frozen corn, and basic pantry spices. Keep it affordable and use minimal fresh ingredients. I have chicken thighs, broccoli, onions, soy sauce, and rice. Create a balanced dinner using mostly these ingredients. Tell me what optional extras would improve it. Create a vegetarian, high-protein lunch I can make in 20 minutes. Use common ingredients and include simple substitutions. I have leftover roasted vegetables and cooked pasta. Turn them into a new recipe for two people with minimal additional ingredients. Make a meal-prep recipe for four lunches that reheats well. Keep it under 500 calories per serving and include storage tips. ## Tips for better imports * Ask for a clean recipe format with clear sections: title, ingredients, and instructions. * Copy only the recipe you want to save. Leave out long conversation history or unrelated notes. * If the recipe is vague, ask the AI app to add exact ingredient amounts before copying it into Souschef. * Edit the recipe in Souschef before saving if you want to adjust servings, swap ingredients, or add notes. *** ## Still need help? Facebook recipes also appear in AI Discovery. Importing from Facebook is included in the free version of Souschef. Souschef can save any recipe you spot on Facebook — from a friend's shared post to a viral cooking video or reel. If a Facebook post is a strong match for your query, it will appear right alongside results from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and recipe websites — and you can import it into your collection with a single tap. For reels and video posts, keep Souschef open while it processes the recipe. Audio analysis takes a bit longer than a caption-only extraction, but the results are much richer. ## Troubleshooting If a Facebook import came back empty or is missing details, see [Why a recipe import might fail](/importing/why-import-fails). Pinterest is a wonderful place to discover recipe ideas, but keeping track of all those pins can quickly turn into a mess. With Souschef, you can import any Pinterest recipe directly into your collection — where you can scale servings, build a shopping list, and cook without the clutter. There are three ways to do it, so pick whichever works best for you! ## How to import a recipe from Pinterest Already looking at a recipe pin in the Pinterest app? Share it straight to Souschef. Open the pin you want to save, then tap the **Share** button (the arrow icon) below the image. Pinterest pin with the Share button highlighted In the **Share Pin link** menu, tap **More apps** to open your phone's share sheet. Souschef has a built-in Pinterest explorer that lets you browse and import recipes without ever leaving the app. Open Souschef and tap the **+** button at the bottom of your collection. On the import screen, tap the **Pinterest** logo to open the in-app explorer. Already have a Pinterest pin you want to save? You can paste the link directly into Souschef. In the Pinterest app or in your browser, open the pin and copy its URL. Open Souschef and tap the **+** button at the bottom of your collection. Select **Import from URL** from the options. Paste the pin URL and tap **Import**. Souschef will extract the recipe and add it to your collection. Keep Souschef open while it processes the recipe — closing the app too early may interrupt the import. ## Why import Pinterest recipes into Souschef? * **Turn inspiration into meals** — import recipes directly, then customize them, scale servings, and swap ingredients. * **Smart shopping lists** — add all ingredients to your [shopping list](/using/shopping-list) in one tap, sorted by store section. * **No more clutter** — keep everything in one place instead of juggling screenshots, links, and notes. ## Troubleshooting If the recipe didn't import correctly or some details are missing, see [Why a recipe import might fail](/importing/why-import-fails) for common causes and what to do. *** ## Still need help? You can also write a recipe from scratch. Importing from plain text is included in the free version of Souschef. Not every recipe comes with a nice URL. Family recipes handed down in a text message, notes from a cooking class, a copy-paste from an email newsletter, or a recipe you generated in ChatGPT or Claude — Souschef can turn all of these into structured recipes too. You can either paste the text and let Souschef's AI do the extraction, or create a recipe entirely by hand. ## Paste recipe text Copy the recipe from wherever you found it — a Notes app, a text message, a webpage, an email, anywhere. Tap the **+** button on your library screen to start a new import. Select **Text** from the import options and paste your copied recipe into the text field. Import Recipe screen with the Text option highlighted Souschef's AI reads the text and pulls out the title, ingredients, quantities, and step-by-step instructions — even if the original text was a messy paragraph. Review the extracted recipe. Tap any field to fix a typo, adjust a quantity, or add a missing step. Tap **Save** when you're happy. Paste as much or as little as you like. Even a single paragraph works — Souschef will do its best to structure it into ingredients and steps. ## Paste from ChatGPT or Claude If you use ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI chat app to brainstorm meals, copy the recipe response and import it with **Text**. Souschef works best when the copied recipe includes a title, ingredients, servings, and step-by-step instructions. Learn how to ask AI for recipes based on expiring ingredients, pantry staples, leftovers, dietary preferences, or meal prep goals. ## Create a recipe manually Prefer to type it out yourself? You can build a recipe from scratch, no source required. From the import menu, choose **Create** to start with a blank recipe. Sous the cat looking puzzled — that import didn't work
Most imports in Souschef work quickly and smoothly — but every now and then, something doesn't go quite as expected. Don't worry! There are usually simple explanations and easy fixes. Below you'll find the most common reasons an import might fail, along with what you can do about each one. Souschef extracts recipe information from the post's caption or description and, when available, the video's spoken audio. If the recipe isn't described in either source, the imported recipe may be incomplete — or there may be nothing for Souschef to extract. **What to try:** Look for a post where the creator has included the recipe in the caption (or description), or spoken through the ingredients and steps in the video. These tend to work best. You can also try [pasting the recipe as plain text](/importing/import-from-plain-text) if a friend shared it separately. Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube imports can take up to 30 seconds because Souschef is analyzing the caption (or description) and spoken audio when available. If it seems stuck well beyond that, something may have gone wrong in the process. **What to try:** Close the Souschef app completely, then reopen it and try the import again. Make sure you have a stable internet connection before retrying. Souschef works with most popular recipe blogs, but some websites use custom or non-standard layouts that make it harder to extract structured recipe data. **What to try:** If the import is incomplete, you can copy the URL and try importing it again — sometimes a retry does the trick. Alternatively, take a screenshot of the recipe page and use the [Scan feature](/importing/import-from-photos) to extract it from the image instead. AI extraction is smart, but it's not perfect. Sometimes an ingredient quantity, a step, or the recipe title might be missing or slightly off — especially if the original post or page was formatted in an unusual way. **What to try:** You can edit any field inside Souschef before saving. Tap any ingredient, step, or title to update it. It only takes a moment to fill in what's missing and you'll end up with a perfect recipe ready to cook. If you can't find the Souschef icon when you tap Share in Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, or your browser, it may not have been added to your share menu yet. **What to try:** Follow our guide on [how to add Souschef to your share menu](/getting-started/add-to-share-menu) — it only takes a minute and you'll only need to do it once. If someone sent you a recipe by text message, email, or in a Notes app, you don't need to find a link. **What to try:** Use [Import from plain text](/importing/import-from-plain-text). Copy the recipe text, tap **+** in Souschef, choose **Paste text**, and Souschef's AI will structure it into ingredients and steps. Occasionally a temporary issue can cause an import to fail with an error — this can happen due to a brief network hiccup or a problem on the source platform's end. **What to try:** Wait a moment and try the import again. If it keeps failing after a couple of attempts, please [contact our support team](/troubleshooting/contact-support) and let us know which source you were importing from and what the error said — we'll look into it right away. You can always edit a recipe after importing — tap the recipe in your collection, then tap **Edit** to fix anything that didn't extract correctly. Chef the cat looking dizzy — the app isn't cooperating
If Souschef isn't opening, is stuck on a loading screen, or keeps crashing, you're not alone — and the good news is that a few simple steps resolve the vast majority of these issues. Work through the steps below in order, and you'll likely be back in the kitchen in no time. Reinstalling the app won't delete your recipes as long as you sign back in with the same account afterward. Your recipe collection lives in the cloud, not just on your device. The first thing to try is always a fresh start. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-press the Home button) to see your open apps, then swipe Souschef away to close it. On Android, tap the Recent Apps button and swipe Souschef off the screen. Then reopen the app. Some features in Souschef require an active internet connection to work. Try loading a webpage in your browser to confirm you're online. If your connection is slow or unstable, switching from Wi-Fi to cellular data (or vice versa) can help. An outdated version of the app can sometimes cause unexpected crashes or loading issues. Open the **App Store** (iOS) or **Google Play** (Android), search for Souschef, and install any available update. A full device restart clears out temporary glitches that can affect apps. Hold down the power button, restart your phone, and try opening Souschef again once it boots up. If nothing else has worked, deleting and reinstalling Souschef will give you a clean slate. Uninstall the app, then download it again from the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/souschef-recipe-organizer/id6468939420) or [Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.souschef.app). Sign back in with your account and your recipes will be right there waiting for you. Always keep Souschef updated to the latest version — updates include bug fixes and performance improvements that keep everything running smoothly. If the problem continues after trying all of the above, please email [support@nekonote.co](mailto:support@nekonote.co) with a description of what's happening, your device model (e.g., iPhone 15, Samsung Galaxy S24), and your operating system version (e.g., iOS 18.1, Android 15). Chef the cat looking confused — something didn't go as expected
Most recipe imports in Souschef complete in under 30 seconds — but occasionally one gets stuck, returns an error, or comes through looking a little off. Don't worry! There are a handful of common causes, and most of them are easy to fix. Here's what to try depending on what you're seeing. You can always edit a recipe after importing by opening it and tapping the Edit button. If the import spinner has been going for more than 30 seconds, it may be stuck. Here's what to do: 1. Close the Souschef app completely (force-quit it). 2. Check that you have a stable internet connection — try loading a webpage to confirm. 3. Reopen Souschef and try the import again. Slow or interrupted connections are the most common culprit here. If you're on a weak Wi-Fi signal or cellular data, switching networks can help. Souschef extracts recipe information from the post's caption or description and, when available, the video's spoken audio — but not every food video actually includes a recipe. If the import completed but no recipe appeared (or the result is empty), it's likely because the post didn't contain enough recipe details for Souschef to work with. A few things to check: * Does the post's caption (or description) include ingredients or steps? * Does the creator mention the recipe in their spoken audio? * Is the recipe only written in the comments? Souschef doesn't read comments, so those details won't be imported. If the post genuinely doesn't have a recipe in the caption, description, or spoken audio, Souschef won't be able to extract one. Try looking for a version of the post that includes the full recipe details. You can also [paste the recipe as plain text](/importing/import-from-plain-text) if someone shared it with you separately. Some recipe websites use technical measures that can prevent automated extraction. If sharing a URL from your browser didn't work, try this instead: 1. Copy the recipe page's URL. 2. In Souschef, tap the **+** button. 3. Select **Import from URL**. 4. Paste the URL and tap Import. If the site still doesn't work, it may be blocking extraction entirely. In that case, you can create a new recipe manually in Souschef and paste in the details yourself. Souschef uses AI to extract recipes, and while it does a great job most of the time, it isn't perfect — especially with unusually formatted pages or posts. If some ingredients or steps didn't come through: 1. Open the recipe in Souschef. 2. Tap the **Edit** button. 3. Fill in any missing details manually. Your edits are saved automatically, so the recipe will be complete and ready to use next time. If Souschef showed you an error message during the import: 1. Close the app completely. 2. Check your internet connection. 3. Reopen Souschef and try the import again. Most errors are temporary and resolve on their own. If you keep seeing the same error after a few tries, please [reach out to support](mailto:support@nekonote.co) — sharing a screenshot of the error message is really helpful! If the recipe imported successfully but something looks off — wrong title, scrambled ingredients, missing steps — you can fix it right in the app: 1. Open the recipe. 2. Tap **Edit**. 3. Correct any fields that need updating. This can happen with recipes from sites that use non-standard formatting. A quick edit gets everything back on track. ## Still need help? Sous the cat helping look for the share menu
If you tap **Share** in your browser or another app and Souschef isn't showing up, don't worry — it just needs to be added to your share menu. It's a quick, one-time setup, and once it's done you'll be able to send recipes to Souschef with a single tap. Follow the steps for your device below. 1. Open any browser app (like Safari or Chrome) and tap the **Share** button (the box with an arrow pointing up). 2. Scroll the row of icons to the right and tap **More**. 3. Tap **Edit** in the top-right corner. 4. Scroll through the list to find **Souschef** and tap the **+** button next to it to add it. 5. Once added, press and drag Souschef to the top of the list so it's easy to find. 6. Tap **Done** to save your changes. Souschef will now appear near the top of your share sheet whenever you tap Share in any app. If Souschef isn't listed at all in the Edit screen, try restarting your phone first — this refreshes your share options list and should make Souschef appear. 1. Open any browser app and tap the **Share** button. 2. Scroll to the **bottom** of the share options list. 3. Find **Souschef** and **long-press** on it. 4. Tap **Pin Souschef**. Souschef will now be pinned near the top of your share options for easy access! If Souschef still doesn't appear after following these steps, make sure the Souschef app is installed and fully up to date, then try restarting your phone. This usually does the trick! ## Still need help? If you've followed the steps above and Souschef still won't show up in your share menu, we're here to help. Visit our [contact support page](/troubleshooting/contact-support) or email [support@nekonote.co](mailto:support@nekonote.co) and we'll get it sorted out. ## Related articles * [Add Souschef to your share menu](/getting-started/add-to-share-menu) * [Import from Facebook](/importing/import-from-facebook) * [Import from plain text](/importing/import-from-plain-text) * [Contact Souschef support](/troubleshooting/contact-support) # Recipes appear to be missing from Souschef Source: https://docs.trysouschef.com/troubleshooting/recipes-missing If your saved recipes have disappeared from Souschef, find out why and how to get them back in a few steps.
Chef the cat looking around, wondering where the recipes went
If you open Souschef and your recipes aren't there, take a breath — they're most likely not gone! There are a few common reasons a recipe collection might appear empty or incomplete, and most of them are solved in just a step or two. Here's what to check. Recipes that were imported while not signed in may not sync to the cloud. Always sign in to make sure your collection is safely backed up. Your recipes are tied to the account you used when you saved them. If you're signed in with a different email address, your collection will look empty. **To fix this:** 1. Go to the Account or Settings section in Souschef. 2. Sign out of your current account. 3. Sign back in using the email address you originally used to save your recipes. Your recipes should reappear right away. Switched to a new phone? Your recipes are stored with your account, not on the device itself — so you just need to sign in to get them back. Sign in to Souschef on your new device using your existing account credentials, and your recipe collection should sync automatically. For more help with this, see [Sign in on another device](/account/sign-in-another-device). Sometimes the app just needs a nudge to load the latest data. 1. Close Souschef completely (force-quit the app). 2. Reopen it. 3. Once the recipe list is visible, pull down from the top to trigger a manual refresh. If your recipes were there before, they should reappear after the refresh. If you deleted and reinstalled Souschef, your recipes aren't gone — they're still tied to your account in the cloud. Simply sign back in with the same account you used before, and your collection will be restored. If you believe your recipes may have been saved in an offline or local-only mode, please [contact our support team](mailto:support@nekonote.co) and we'll help you figure out what happened and whether those recipes can be recovered. ## Check your Imported Recipes history If a recipe seems missing because you're not sure whether an import actually finished, check the **Imported Recipes** tab on your **Bookmarks** screen. It shows a device-local history of your recipe import attempts, grouped by day — so you can see exactly what you tried to save and when. From this history you can: * **Open successful imports** to jump straight to the saved recipe. * **Retry certain failures** with one tap. * **Report unsupported sites** to help us improve Souschef's coverage. Imported Recipes tab showing successful and failed import attempts grouped by day Imported Recipes history is **capped at 50 items and 30 days**, and it's stored **on your device only** — it doesn't sync across devices. It's a lookup tool for recent import attempts, not a replacement for saving recipes to your bookmarks. Always save any recipe you want to keep. ## Still need help? If you've tried everything above and your recipes still aren't showing up, we'd love to help you track them down. Email us at [support@nekonote.co](mailto:support@nekonote.co) with a description of the situation, or visit our [contact support page](/troubleshooting/contact-support). ## Related articles * [Sign in on another device](/account/sign-in-another-device) * [Contact Souschef support](/troubleshooting/contact-support) # Souschef subscription not showing or not recognized Source: https://docs.trysouschef.com/troubleshooting/subscription-not-recognized If your Souschef subscription isn't being recognized after purchase or reinstall, here's how to restore it on iPhone or Android.
Sous the cat looking puzzled — that's unexpected
If you've subscribed to Souschef Plus but the app doesn't seem to know about it — you're still hitting the 5-per-week import limit — you can usually fix this in a moment by restoring your purchase. ## Restore your subscription 1. Open the **Souschef** app. 2. Go to **Account** or **Settings**. 3. Tap **Restore Purchases**. 4. If prompted, sign in with your Apple ID. Souschef will check your purchase history with the App Store and re-activate your subscription. On Android, your subscription should restore automatically as long as you're signed in to the same Google account you used when you subscribed. 1. Make sure you're signed in to Souschef with your account. 2. Verify that you're using the same Google account tied to your Google Play purchase. 3. Close and reopen the app to prompt a refresh. If it still isn't recognized after reopening, try the steps in the "Still not working?" section below. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID or Google account you used when you originally subscribed. Using a different account is the most common reason a subscription doesn't restore. ## Still not working? If restoring your purchase didn't do the trick, here are a few more things to try: 1. **Check that your subscription is still active** — open the App Store (Settings → your name → Subscriptions on iOS) or Google Play (Menu → Subscriptions on Android) and confirm the subscription is active and hasn't expired. 2. **Force-quit and reopen the app** — this prompts Souschef to re-check your subscription status. 3. **Contact support** — email us at [support@nekonote.co](mailto:support@nekonote.co) and include your receipt or purchase confirmation. We'll look into it and get you sorted out. For a more detailed walkthrough, see the [Restore your purchase](/billing/restore-purchase) guide. ## Still need help? We're happy to help! Reach out at [support@nekonote.co](mailto:support@nekonote.co) and include any relevant details about your purchase (platform, date, the email/account used), and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. ## Related articles * [Restore your purchase](/billing/restore-purchase) * [How to subscribe to Souschef Plus](/billing/subscribe) * [About Souschef Plus](/billing/subscription-benefits) # Adjust recipe servings and scale ingredients in Souschef Source: https://docs.trysouschef.com/using/adjust-servings Scale any recipe up or down in Souschef. AI Discovery is Souschef's way of turning a vague craving into an actual dinner plan. Describe what you're in the mood for — the ingredients you want to use, what you're craving, your diet, or the occasion — and Souschef generates smart search queries and searches multiple sources at once. Results are grouped and easy to browse, and any recipe you like can be imported straight into your collection. ## What you can search for Describe your meal in whatever way feels natural. AI Discovery is designed to understand: * **Ingredients** — e.g., "chicken thighs and yogurt" or "whatever's in my Pantry" * **Cravings** — e.g., "something spicy and comforting" or "crunchy and fresh" * **Diets** — e.g., "high protein," "vegan," "gluten free" * **Occasions** — e.g., "weeknight dinner for two," "party appetizer," "kid-friendly lunch" You can combine any of these in a single prompt — the more you tell Souschef, the better the results. ## Choose a creativity level Before running a search, pick how adventurous you want the results to be: * **Precise** — sticks closely to your exact prompt. Best when you have a specific dish in mind. * **Balanced** *(default)* — a good mix of closely matched and slightly more inventive suggestions. * **Creative** — wider, more surprising results. Great for when you want inspiration. Discover Recipe sheet with suggested searches, Describe your craving input, and Creative mode selected ## The sources AI Discovery searches Souschef generates search queries from your prompt and then searches across: * **Recipe websites** * **Instagram** * **TikTok** * **Facebook** * **YouTube** Pinterest recipes may also appear in results. ## Understanding the results Results are grouped so you can scan them quickly: * **Featured matches** — the recipes AI Discovery thinks are the strongest fit for your prompt, shown at the top. * **Grouped results** — the rest of the results, organized by source (websites, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube) so you can pick the format you prefer. AI Recipe Search results for Tzatziki chicken bowls with matching recipe cards from YouTube and Instagram ## Import a result into your library Every result has two options: * **Import directly** — tap **Import** and Souschef pulls the recipe into your library the same way any other import does. Ingredients, steps, tags, and nutrition are extracted automatically. * **Open the original link** — tap the result to view the source (a website, Instagram post, TikTok, Facebook post, or YouTube video) in its original app or browser. If a result looks interesting but you're not sure, import it — you can always edit or delete it later. Importing is the fastest way to actually try a recipe. ## How to run an AI Discovery search Tap the **Discover** (or **Search**) tab in Souschef. Type your ingredients, cravings, diet, or occasion into the prompt field. Choose Precise, Balanced, or Creative. Browse the featured matches at the top, then scroll through grouped results by source. [Contact support](/troubleshooting/contact-support) # How to translate recipes in Souschef with AI Recipe Translation Source: https://docs.trysouschef.com/using/ai-translation AI Recipe Translation turns any recipe into another language while preserving the original. Supports English, Japanese, Spanish, French, and 10 more. This feature is included in the free version of Souschef. AI Recipe Translation lets you turn any recipe in your library into another language — in seconds — without losing the original. Souschef uses an AI model built specifically for recipe translation, so cooking terms, ingredient names, and technique language stay accurate across languages. Souschef creates a linked translated recipe, keeps the source recipe untouched, and clearly marks the translated version so you always know where it came from. Perfect for cooking a family recipe in the language it was written in, or for sharing a favorite with someone who speaks a different language. ## Supported languages Recipes can be translated between any of these languages: * English * Japanese * Spanish * French * German * Italian * Korean * Chinese * Portuguese * Dutch * Swedish * Danish * Finnish * Polish ## What translation does When you translate a recipe, Souschef: * **Creates a linked translated recipe** — a new recipe in your library with all text (title, ingredients, steps, notes) in the target language. * **Preserves the original** — your original recipe stays exactly as you had it. Translation never overwrites the source. * **Displays "Translated from…"** — the new recipe shows a clear label linking back to the original so you always know its origin. Translated recipe showing a Translated from label that links back to the original recipe ## How to translate a recipe Tap the recipe in your library. Tap the translate icon in the top bar. Recipe screen with the translate button highlighted in the top bar Pick from the list of supported languages. Translate recipe sheet with a search field and a list of languages to choose from Souschef creates a new, linked recipe in your library with the translated content. Tap **Save** to keep it. You can translate the same recipe into multiple languages. Each translation is a separate linked recipe, so a Japanese and Spanish version of the same dish can live side by side in your library. ## Editing translated recipes Translated recipes are fully editable just like any other recipe. If a phrase didn't land quite right or you want to swap in a more familiar cooking term, tap **Edit** and make it yours. *** ## Related articles * [Convert measurements](/using/convert-measurements) * [Organize and search](/using/organize-and-search) ## Still need help? Following an American recipe but you only own a kitchen scale? Souschef has you covered. Shared recipe links also let viewers switch between supported measurement systems (Metric, US Customary, and more) in the browser. ## How to convert measurements Tap any recipe in your Souschef library to open it. Conversions are calculated based on standard cooking measurements. For the most accurate results with dry ingredients like flour or cocoa powder, a kitchen scale is always your best bet — volume measurements can vary depending on how tightly packed the ingredient is. Sous the cat ready to cook, oven mitten on
Cooking Mode is the heart of Souschef — it turns any recipe into a step-by-step cooking guide on your phone. It keeps your screen awake, manages timers, and cuts down how often you need to touch the screen. For voice control — next step, timers, read-aloud, and ingredient amounts — see [Hands-Free Cooking](/using/hands-free-cooking). ## What Cooking Mode does Move through your recipe one step at a time so you always know exactly where you are and what comes next. Your phone stays lit the entire time you're in Cooking Mode — so you tap less just to keep the screen on. Time mentions in recipe steps are automatically detected and turned into one-tap countdown timers. Turn on the mic to move between steps, start timers, hear instructions, and check amounts by voice — see [Hands-Free Cooking](/using/hands-free-cooking). Tap any ingredient name in a step to instantly see its quantity — no scrolling back to the top of the recipe. All prep tasks (like chopping, mincing, or preheating) are listed upfront as a checklist before cooking begins. Pin up to 5 recipes in a now-cooking tray so you can jump between a main dish and sides. Change the number of servings right inside Cooking Mode and all ingredient quantities recalculate automatically. ## How to start Cooking Mode Tap any recipe in your Souschef library to open it. Tap **Step by Step** to launch Cooking Mode. Recipe detail with the Step by Step button highlighted Before the first cooking step, you'll see a checklist of all the prep tasks for this recipe — including things like preheating the oven. Good news — Hands-Free Cooking is available to everyone using the Souschef app. Hands-free cooking lets you cook from a recipe without touching your phone. In [Cooking Mode](/using/cooking-mode), turn on the microphone and speak short commands to move between steps, start timers, hear the current step read aloud, and ask how much of an ingredient you need. Cooking Mode is the full-screen, step-by-step cooking experience. Hands-free is the voice layer on top of it. Voice commands work in the Souschef iOS and Android apps — not in the lightweight web viewer. Supported voice languages are English and Japanese (they follow your app language setting). ## What you can do Say **Next** or **Back** to move between steps when your hands are messy or busy. Ask Souschef to read the instruction aloud, or let auto-read speak each new step. Start or pause a step timer, or set a custom timer for any duration up to 12 hours. Ask how much of an ingredient you need — amounts follow your current servings and units. ## How to turn it on Tap any recipe in your library, then tap **Step by Step** (or **Start Cooking**) to enter Cooking Mode. Tap the microphone in the cooking header, or tap **Turn on** on the tip that says to turn on voice command for hands-free cooking. When prompted, allow microphone access and speech recognition so Souschef can hear and understand your commands. Notifications are recommended so timers can alert you if you leave the app. When the mic is active, Souschef is listening. Speak a short command clearly. Turning voice on also turns on auto-read — the current step is spoken when you move to a new step. To turn voice off, tap the mic again. Exiting Cooking Mode also turns voice off. If microphone access was denied, tap the mic again to open Settings and allow access under **Souschef**. Voice is optional. You can still cook fully hands-on with taps and buttons — see [Cooking Mode](/using/cooking-mode) for the full step-by-step experience. ## Voice commands Commands follow your app language. Use English phrases when the app is in English, and Japanese phrases when the app is in Japanese. ### Move between steps | Say… | What happens | | ----------------------------------------- | ----------------------- | | Next / Next step | Go to the next step | | Back / Previous / Previous step / Go back | Go to the previous step | If you're already on the first or last step, Souschef will say so. ### Read the current step | Say… | What happens | | ----------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------- | | Read step / Read the step / Read it / Read this | Reads the current instruction aloud | You can also use the **Read step** control on the step when voice is on. With voice off, the volume icon toggles auto-read. ### Step timers These commands control a timer that already belongs to the current step: | Say… | What happens | | ------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | | Start timer / Start the timer / Begin timer | Starts or resumes the timer for this step | | Stop timer / Pause timer | Pauses the timer | **Stop** means pause, not cancel. If this step has no timer, you'll hear that there's nothing to start. ### Custom timers You can start a timer for any duration up to 12 hours. Examples that work: * Start new timer for 5 minutes * Start a new 3 minute timer * Set a timer for 90 seconds * Timer for 30 seconds * 5 minute timer * Start new timer for 1 minute 30 seconds Spoken numbers work too (for example, “five minutes” or “thirty seconds”). Include the unit — say “5 minutes” or “30 seconds,” not just “5.” ### Ingredient amounts | Say… | What happens | | --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | How much salt / How much olive oil do I need? | Speaks the amount for that ingredient (using your current serving size and unit preference) | Optional wording like “of” or “please” is fine. Use the ingredient name as written in the recipe. If the ingredient isn't found, you'll hear that it couldn't be found. While voice is on, the focus view may show short hints such as “How much \[ingredient] do I need?” and “Start new timer for 5 minutes.” When the app language is set to Japanese, use phrases like these: | Action | Examples | | ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------- | | Next | 次 / 次へ / 次のステップ | | Back | 前 / 前へ / 戻る / 前のステップ | | Read step | ステップを読んで / 読み上げて / 読み上げ | | Start step timer | タイマーを開始 / タイマー開始 / タイマーをスタート | | Pause step timer | タイマーを止めて / タイマーを停止 / タイマーを一時停止 | | Custom timer | 新しいタイマーを5分開始 / 30秒のタイマーを開始 / タイマーを1分30秒 / 5分セット | | How much | 塩はどれくらい / バターはどのくらい / 砂糖の量 | The same behaviors apply as in English: **Stop** pauses a step timer (it does not delete it), custom timers need a clear duration, and ingredient questions use names from the recipe list. ## Tips for best results * Speak clearly and briefly — short phrases work best. * Match the app language — English commands if the app is in English; Japanese if in Japanese. * Keep the app open and in the foreground — listening pauses when the app is backgrounded or while Souschef is speaking. * Unmute the phone — on iOS, the mute switch can silence spoken feedback and step reading. * For custom timers, include the unit — say “5 minutes” or “30 seconds,” not just “5.” * Use the ingredient name as written in the recipe — closer names match better for “how much…”. * Step timers need a timer in that step — otherwise use a custom timer phrase. * Hands-free works best in the one-step-at-a-time focus view. ## FAQ No. Cooking Mode and hands-free voice commands are available in the Souschef iOS and Android apps only. The lightweight web viewer is for shared recipes, shopping lists, and collections. Check **Settings → Souschef → Microphone** and **Speech Recognition**. If permission was denied earlier, tap the mic again to open Settings and allow access. Try a shorter phrase from the command tables above. Wait until Souschef finishes speaking before giving the next command. Make sure the mic looks active and listening. Unrecognized speech is ignored — there is no “I didn’t catch that” message in this version. No — it only pauses. Resume with “Start timer,” or manage timers from the timer button. See [Timers](/using/timers) for manual timer controls. Not yet — voice can pause a timer, but not cancel or delete it. Remove or manage timers in the timer UI. Turning voice on enables auto-read. Tap **Read step** (or the volume control) to turn auto-read off if you only want voice commands. Voice still listens, but the on-step hints and read-step control are designed for the one-step-at-a-time focus view. Spoken commands follow the app language. Reading a step aloud can follow the recipe’s language when it’s English or Japanese. *** ## Still need help? If you have questions or run into anything unexpected, our team is happy to help. If nutrition is missing, Generate Nutrition uses AI to estimate it. This feature is included in the free version of Souschef. Souschef shows nutrition information right inside your recipe so you can plan meals with a clear picture of what you're eating. When the source website already includes nutrition, Souschef uses that; when it doesn't, you can generate estimates with AI in a single tap. You can sort your library by calories per serving and edit any value yourself. ## What Souschef shows Every recipe with nutrition data displays a per-serving breakdown of: * **Calories** * **Protein** * **Carbohydrates** * **Fat** * **Additional nutrients** (fiber, sugar, sodium, and more when available) ## Where nutrition comes from Souschef pulls nutrition data from two places: * **From the source website**, when a recipe is imported from a site that publishes structured nutrition data. * **From AI estimates**, when the source doesn't include nutrition or you've created a recipe yourself. AI estimates are **clearly labeled** so you always know whether a number came from the original recipe or was estimated. ## Generate Nutrition with AI If a recipe doesn't have nutrition information, generate an estimate in one tap. Tap any recipe in your library. In the nutrition section, tap **Generate Nutrition**. Souschef reads the ingredients, quantities, and servings and produces an estimate for calories, protein, carbs, fat, and additional nutrients. Tap any number to edit it if you'd like a more precise value. Nutrition panel showing calories, protein, carbs, and fat labeled as AI Estimate AI nutrition estimates are meant as a helpful guide, not medical or dietary advice. Actual values depend on brands, exact quantities, and how you cook — always double-check if you have specific dietary needs. ## Edit nutrition manually You can always override any value. Tap the nutrition section, then edit calories, protein, carbs, fat, or add more nutrients. Choose whether values are listed **Per serving** or **Per recipe**. This is handy when you know a value more precisely than the source or the AI does.

Learn when it's useful, how it works with Shopping Lists, and how to share feedback. Good news — Pantry is available to everyone using Souschef.
Sous the cat proudly holding a pantry can
Pantry is an experimental feature for keeping a simple list of ingredients you already have. It is still evolving — and it works best when you treat it as a lightweight reminder, not a full inventory system. ## When Pantry is useful Pantry is most practical for long-lasting ingredients that stay in your kitchen for weeks or months. Think of it as a place to remember the staples you tend to forget you already own. Good fits include: * Spices and herbs * Sauces, oils, and condiments * Baking staples * Dry pantry items (rice, pasta, canned goods, and similar) If you mostly cook with the same shelf-stable staples, Pantry can help you skip those items when you generate a [shopping list](/using/shopping-list). ## How it works with Shopping Lists When you [generate a shopping list](/using/shopping-list) from a recipe, Souschef checks ingredients against your Pantry: * Matching ingredients are marked with an **In Pantry** badge * Those ingredients are not added to the shopping list automatically * You can still add them manually if you're running low Add to List sheet with Miso marked In pantry and excluded from the shopping list ## How to add ingredients The most reliable way to use Pantry today is to add items manually. Tap the **+** button in Pantry, type the ingredient name, and choose a location if you want. You can also organize items by location (Fridge, Freezer, or Pantry) and edit or remove them anytime. ### Experimental ways to add items Pantry also supports: * **Receipt scanning** — photograph a grocery receipt and review detected items before adding them * **Pantry photos** — photograph a shelf or fridge and review detected ingredients before adding them These workflows are still experimental. They can be interesting to try, but we do not recommend them as part of an everyday routine yet. ## What Pantry is not (yet) Pantry is not a finished inventory management system. A few current limitations: * It does not automatically stay up to date as you cook or shop * Continuously updating it after every grocery trip often adds more effort than value * Receipt scanning and pantry photos are experimental, not everyday tools You do not need to track everything you buy. Fresh produce and other short-lived ingredients change too often to be worth the upkeep for most people. ## Why some people skip tracking everything For many cooks, a complete kitchen inventory creates more maintenance than benefit. Pantry works best when you keep it small — a short list of staples that tend to stick around. If maintaining Pantry feels like a chore, use it less or skip it entirely. Shopping Lists and the rest of Souschef work fine without it. Start with spices, oils, sauces, and a few dry staples. That small set is often enough to make shopping lists a bit smarter without much upkeep. ## Help shape Pantry Pantry is one of Souschef's newest experimental features, and we're still exploring the best way to make it genuinely useful. If you have ideas, workflows, or pain points you'd like Pantry to solve, we'd love to hear from you. Your feedback will directly influence where the feature goes next. Quick answers about [Pantry](/using/pantry). Can't find yours here? [Contact support](/troubleshooting/contact-support) and we'll help. No. Pantry works best as a lightweight list of long-lasting ingredients — not a complete inventory of everything you buy. Tracking fresh produce and other short-lived items usually creates more upkeep than value. Keep it small, or skip Pantry entirely if it doesn't fit how you cook. Long-lasting staples are the best fit today: spices, herbs, sauces, oils, condiments, baking staples, and dry pantry items. These change slowly, so a short list stays useful without constant updates. Yes. Receipt scanning is available as an experimental way to add items. You photograph a receipt, review the detected items, then choose what to add. It can be useful to try, but we do not recommend it as part of an everyday routine yet while Pantry is still evolving. Yes. Pantry photo recognition is also experimental. You can photograph a shelf or fridge, review what Souschef detects, and add the items you want. Treat it as something to try — not a required setup step. No. Pantry does not automatically update as you cook or shop. You add, edit, and remove items yourself. That is why we suggest tracking only ingredients that stick around for a long time. *** ## Related articles * [Pantry](/using/pantry) * [Shopping List](/using/shopping-list) ## Still need help? Sous the cat — off to the grocery store
Souschef's Smart Shopping List turns your recipes into an organized grocery list in seconds. Better yet, it automatically sorts everything by store aisle — dairy with dairy, produce with produce — so you can move through the store in one smooth loop without doubling back. And if you use [Pantry](/using/pantry), matching ingredients can be skipped automatically, so your list focuses on what you still need. Say goodbye to the scattered, hard-to-read notes you used to bring to the grocery store! ## Create a shopping list from a recipe Make sure the recipe you want to shop for is already saved in Souschef. If you haven't imported it yet, check out [Import your first recipe](/getting-started/import-your-first-recipe) to get started. Open the recipe and tap the **Add to List** button. Recipe detail with the Add to List button highlighted Choose how many servings you're making — the ingredient quantities will update automatically to match. Add to List sheet with servings highlighted and ingredients selected If you use [Pantry](/using/pantry), Souschef checks the recipe against ingredients you've added there. Matching items are marked with an **In Pantry** badge and are **not** added to the shopping list. You can still add them manually if you're running low. You can also uncheck any other ingredient you already have on hand — anything unchecked is skipped from the list. Hit the **Add items** button and your shopping list is ready — automatically sorted by store aisle so you can shop efficiently. Shopping list sorted by aisle with Baking and Miscellaneous sections [Pantry](/using/pantry) works best as a lightweight list of long-lasting staples — spices, oils, sauces, and dry goods — rather than a complete inventory you update after every grocery trip. ## Add multiple recipes at once Planning meals for the whole week? You can keep adding recipes to the same list, or send a day or week from [Meal Plan](/using/meal-planner). Souschef **merges ingredients together** — so if two recipes both need garlic, it combines them into a single line item. Open your shopping list and tap **Edit**. Shopping list with the Edit button highlighted Tap **Add Recipe Ingredients**. Edit shopping list with Add Recipe Ingredients highlighted Pick a recipe from your library, then select the ingredients you need — same as when you add from a recipe detail page. Add recipes to shopping list sheet showing saved recipes ## Add non-recipe items Your shopping trip isn't just about dinner — you might need paper towels, dish soap, or a snack for the kids too. Add those manually so everything stays in one place. Open your shopping list and tap **Edit**. Tap **Add Items Manually**. Edit shopping list with Add Items Manually highlighted Enter the item name under **Misc**, then tap **Done**. This feature is included in the free version of Souschef. When a recipe step says something like "bake for 25 minutes" or "let the dough rest for 1 hour," Souschef highlights that time as a tappable timer. No more unlocking your phone, hunting for the clock app, and trying to remember what you just read — everything stays right where you're cooking. ## Starting a timer Timers live right inside [Cooking Mode](/using/cooking-mode), so they're always within reach: As you follow along in Cooking Mode, look for **highlighted time mentions** in the step text — these appear underlined with a timer icon. Cooking Mode step with bake for 1 hour highlighted as a tappable timer Tap the highlighted time to open the timer controls. Confirm the duration, then tap play to start the countdown. Cooking Mode with a one-hour Bake timer ready to start and a play button The timer runs directly in the app — you never have to leave your recipe to manage it. ## Add a timer manually You can also create a timer when a recipe doesn't include a time mention, or when you want a custom countdown: In Cooking Mode, tap the timer button (clock with a plus) at the top of the screen. Cooking Mode with the add timer button highlighted Enter the time with the keypad (or tap **+ 30** to add 30 seconds), optionally name the timer, then tap **Start**. Untitled timer sheet with time display, numeric keypad, Reset, and Start ## Managing multiple timers Many recipes have overlapping steps, and Souschef handles that gracefully: * You can run **several timers at the same time** — one for the pasta water, one for the sauce, one for the bread in the oven. * All active timers stay visible without leaving Cooking Mode, so you can keep an eye on everything at a glance. * If you open a [second recipe window](/using/cooking-mode#during-cooking), your timers continue running in the background. If a recipe has overlapping steps, start the longer timer first so both finish close together — it makes timing your meal much easier! *** ## Still need help?
